Today on Feminine Roadmap we’re talking about gray divorce with family therapist Linda Hershman.
Linda realized that she was seeing more and more couples in midlife considering divorce. She had an opportunity to speak in another country and wondered if gray divorce was an issue that would be relevant elsewhere. What she learned was that gray divorce was, in fact, a global issue. This led her to do a lot of research around the topic in preparation for her presentation in Europe.
In this episode we discuss the findings from her research and her counseling practice. Since 1 in 4 marriages in midlife end in divorce, this has become an important area for her to understand. She encourages those considering divorce to take the time to understand why this is happening, identify the fears and real concerns of divorcing later in life.
Also she talks about research on the long term effects of divorce on adult children. She advises listeners to consider what they can do if you’re not sure whether or not you want to get a divorce. Also understanding what kind of supports are available to you as you navigate this journey. Often we turn to friends and family but Linda advises listeners to talk to a professional who can give unbiased input and perspective.
